Every one is different and there is no set answer. Sometimes it is to do with your age, occasionally a medical condition which will probably respond to treatment.
Our bodies respond to stress, and a change in the cycle is often to do with stress - it would help to address the cause of any stress, and to learn to relax and soothe yourself.
I would need to ask questions to help you understand this more, and I suggest that you might want to get some more info on periods - tap it into Google, or do some reading.
If you are worried, go and see your doctor, as they are the experts.
Try not to worry as many women have changes in their periods.

period depends on nutricion and hormones and drugs that we took the last days, even stress can cause problems.
Also every couple of years we notice some abnormality in our period that is because we enter into a different stage of grouth.
In your question whether it is a good thing to have a short or long period....it's the same. Some have 5-7 days period, others 2-3 days...it's normal

Periods can change as you get older. Things like a change in diet, more exercise, an illness etc. can all affect your periods too, it is not uncommon. Mine used to last for 7 days and be really heavy. Now I can time them coming on to the day and they only last 3 or 4 days and are quite light. Im sure you are fine, if in doubt though see your GP or gynaecologist.

Genetics are always part of the why we have the type of periods we have and the length of time. Also if you have been sick with even a slight cold, or under a type of stress you will have 'off month' periods. I don't think it means anything if they are longer or shorter as you get older they will change and vary, too.

longer periods are ANNOYiNG !! once, i had a REALLY HEAVY flow that last 14 days !! stress could cause this, or maybe it`s because you just started your period, it could be abnormal for the first 1 - 3 years because your body is getting used to it. shorter periods are better of course, but as for me, shorter periods mean heavier flows, longer periods mean lighter flows. it sucks !

I have the same problem - in october i bled all month! Dont worry about it, the doctor told me it could be down to stress, or just if your feeling a bit low or ill. Your periods are affected by almost everything - your health, moods, weight. Your periods can stop alltogether if your too light.
I wouldnt worry about them at all - they'll sort themselves out

shorter periods are better...girls of our generation have WAY too many periods
the irregular period may be caused by stress or unusual physical exercise (working out when you usually don't)
