the birds refered to are 2 doves as 1 story goes he meet a boy taking 2 doves in a cage to market to b sold and eaten and said that hed bye them from him the boy agreed and ST. Francis of Assisi looked agter them all his life but when he died they built a nest in the open hands of a statue of him and ever since their offspring and their offsprings offspring ...... and so on have nested in the same place every year.

another story of him an aniimlas goes that a wild savge dog (possibel a wolf or just a stray) was casuing problems in either Assisi or a small town near by he approched the 'dog' much to most peoples terror and he called out "be calm my brother" (at least i think thats the quote) and the story goes that the dog calmed and left with him.

finally when St. Francis died a flock of birds (cant remember the type) which were usaully day birds took flight and circled around him as if morning and paying there respects to his passing (he passed at dusk when these birds should have been nesting)

for these and other tales he became the patron saint of ecology/ecologists and anything 2 do with this.

Francis was the son of a rich merchant in Assisi, Italy in the 13th century. He gave up his worldy goods and party-boy lifestyle to serve the poor and sick around his town. He had a following of fellow monks who chose to live a Christ-like lifestyle in opposion to the wealth and greed that was ever-present in the European Middle Ages. A teen girl from a well-to-do family named Clare also followed his example and started an order of nuns. He was a great nature lover and ecologist (for his times) and helped bring Christianity back to the the basics of Jesus- "Love your neighbor". He's a great example for people of all (or no) faith. Hope that answers your question.
