With the report I saw on TV about ASDA this morning, I'm certainly considering if that is actually a shop of horrors, and diverting to TESCO!...

Yes, but I like a good local shop too.

Everyone blames Tesco for the decline of the small trader. However, in France they manage to have MASSIVE supermarkets/hypermarkets and yet the independent traders still go strong in the small towns and villages.

So there's that theory out the window then! People should stop blaming Tesco and look at the British psyche and, more importantly, lifestyle.

We work the longest hours in Europe. If people were able to work shorter hours and were paid better wages (obviously this does exclude footballers and fat cats!), then people would be much more likely to feel inclined to shop locally.

However when you're working every hour god sends and you have to then fit in your shopping into an already overly hectic lifestyle, it makes sense that if you can do it in one go in one place (and get free parking), that's what's going to happen.

I don't think it's right that Tesco buys land and sits on it for years to prevent other businesses buying and trading though, but otherwise I have no problem with it.

I would love to frequent the local shops more but their prices are far too expensive for me and I just cant get what I want or need and I end up going to Tescos in the end.
I use them for milk bread and chocolate but very little else.

No. I prefer to support local businesses rather than the continuing expansion of generic corporate megastores. It is important that independent business gets a chance to flourish on a local level and they can't do this if they are agressively driven out of business by the corporations.

I have seen many excellent local businesses driven out of business by mega stores. For example, my local art supplies shop that had been providing supplies, help and advice to the local art students for decades, was effectively run out of business by Hobby Craft - no offence to anyone working in Hobby Craft, but by comparison to the sort of service offered by the local shop, Hobby Craft is totally hopeless. This is typical of what happens when good local business is destroyed by the introduction of soulless chainstores.

I always try to buy local for things like Meat and bread, but with the prices at Tescos, i buy the majority of food there. Its important to support your local buisnesses though! we dont want them to dissapear.
