It seems sensible - if you can't speak English, you aren't really giving yourself a chance of getting employed. And it will also hopefully help reduce the £4.5 million spent by job centres every year on translation services.
Money invested in education is seldom wasted. I'd rather the government was giving free English lessons and helping people to get jobs than letting them rot on benefit, which isn't good for them or the country.

No it shouldn't and I am ashamed that this will be happening here in the UK. While I believe that it is definitely to immigrants' benefit to learn the language of their new home and I further believe that they should be encouraged to do so; I do not believe that they should be blackmailed into doing so by reducing their benefits. As is increasingly the case this is the Labour government pandering to the prejudices of Middle England.

I'm just surprised that it hasn't been arranged yet. So much money has been wasted for no reason. Not to mention translation services, as interpreters do cost money. Not being able to speak English while living in the UK is not a good reason for being out of work and on benefits.

I have to agree too - the refusal to integrate is largely a reason why people start forming racist views. I haven't seen many problems for people who properly integrate with the country (in fact, the better they can speak English, the more likely they are to find it easier to integrate) but I have seen instances where those who are not able to communicate what they want are treated with disrespect and even rudeness sometimes.
The media now say that multiculturalism in Britain is dead, but better integration on the part of immigrants and ethnic minorities can only improve the ability to be a truly multicultural amd democratic society.
There are obviously going to be those who find it more difficult than others to learn the language but providing FREE lessons are given, it should be in everyone's interest to get and keep these going.
I'm all for it provided these lessons are free and therefore not exclusive in any way.

I agree with this new plan, I think it will sort those who genuinely want to be a part of the community and make a contribution from those who don't.
However, is this going to apply to everyone who claims benefits? There are plenty of "chavvy" types where I live who seem to have the most basic grasp of English...and they were born here!

Absolutely. If you come to the country surely you should do something to contribute, getting a free ride off the state isn't right.
Funny to think that this government still calls itself a 'labour' party...

About time and a good idea !!!
I'd like to know why they're getting benefit anyway, they obviously haven't put anything into the system - no wonder the retirement age has been increased !!!
