In early modern times, tooth creams were stored inside jars until the time came that people found difficulty in using them because of having to reach further down everytime they'd want to get some paste. Inspired by the packaging of foreign foods in collapsible metal tubes during the late 19th century, Dr. Washington Sheffield invented a flexible tube container for tooth paste which made the use of the cream more hygenic and accessible. By the beginning of the 1900s, Dr. Sheffield's Creme Dentifrice revolutionized the packaging of toothpaste and other more products.

Toothpaste in tubes probably started life in the USA in late 19th century. Most people in UK did not use toothpaste until the late c1940s and instead bought a hard slab of paste in a small tin or tub. You rubbed your wet toothbrush over this and then into your mouth etc.
In the early part of the 20th century, most people in UK simply used baking soda to get their teeth clean - it works by the way and is actually both cheap and effective.
Historically, the first toothbrush user I know of was the late Beau Brummel. He brushed his teeth morning and night. Most people didn't bother and the result was a lot of tooth decay in the population.
Worst case of bad teeth in UK was the late Duke of Wellington who is said to have been difficult to understand when he spoke, because of his lack of teeth. Obviously most of them had simply rotted away in his head.
Worst false teeth I ever saw were those worn by George Washington - a complete set, made of cow horn and leather. He hated them, as he said, 'they hurt'.
The worse case of historical teeth, is the digging up of the war dead on the Battle field of Waterloo, only one year after the battle and removing teeth from the dead young soldiers for use in the false teeth industry back here in UK and in Europe.
Just makes you wanna screeeeem! It happened.
