I have always referred to myself as Native American, being in the UK there were no others like me other than my family, and the children we were at school with always called us the Indians which then became the 'pakki's' and no amount of education was ever going to prevent that, I just liked to distinguish between the two

Did you know that Native Americans were called Indians for so long because Christopher Columbus thought he had made it around the world to the country of India? So he called the Native people Indians. And the name stuck for way too long.

Indians live in India! :) So you should really be using "Native American."

Hope this helps!

Depends on their age and the Nation to which they belong?

Many nations refer to themselves as the "original people" or the "first ones"
and find the label Indian or Native American offensive.

So it depends on who you talk to.

Most of the Native American Indians that I know, like to be called by their names.

BUT, calling them Apache, BlackFoot, Sioux, and so forth is what they are.... but try their name first, If you do not know, ask them.... just don't call them brother... or sister,
