My juvenile bearded dragon is holding its mouth open for short periods of time. Why does this happen? Is it normal?

If it is only doing it while basking it is probably just venting (releasing heat) but if you notice any kind of mucus it's in mouth or coming out of its nose or if it is doing this at other times you may be dealing with a respiratory infection and a vet visit will be required.

i agree with everyone else on here you should buy a book on him so you know everything. i didnt get my bearded dragon untill 6 months after i researched about him. its normal what hes doing is letting hot air out from basking in the light. ill give you a website that my vet gave me that should help you out to anapsid.org i hope that helps you out.

this is perfectly normal it's just basking. not to be rude but if you don't know something as basic as this i would reccommend getting a book on the animals so that you understand them better. it will also benefit the animal as you will be able to look after it better by giving food and doing things you wouldn't have normally thought of.
hope this helps and good luck!

yeah, you always should read up on what problems your reptile can get.....this is a basic fact that my baby sister would know. buy a book, go online, talk to a vet. but i give you credit at least you gave it a basking area....

If he does this when he is basking it's fine but if he does it all the time it could be a respiratory infection.
