Officially there are eight. The International Astronomical Union demoted Pluto to the status of being a significant object but not a planet. It really doesn't lie in the plane of all the other planets and with new more powerful telescopes, more objects like Pluto are being discovered. It would be tough to get to the point where kids in the 3rd grade would have to remember names of the 325 planets as more Pluto like objects are discovered.

There used to be, but Pluto was reclassified as a "dwarf planet" in 2006.

The reason for this was the discovery of a new object in our solar system, which was named Eris. After Eris was measured by the Hubble Telescope, it was found to be slightly bigger than Pluto.

The term "planet" was redefined, and Pluto was reclassified, along with Eris and Ceres.
