I was working in a diner temporarily for about 6 weeks. The area that I was working in was a very racist city. (African Americans, I am white). I was very upset each time a customer came in and just dogged on a black person. About a week later, a black woman came in by herself. I was the only waitress in there, so I waited on her. I talked to her for a very long time. And she said to me, " I never get this much attention in any kind of restaurant around here." I was surprised to hear that, but I guess I shouldn't have been. I explained to her that where i grew up was a mixture of people. She thought that that was great.
When she left, she left me on the table a 10.00 tip, and she only had a coffee, and a waffle. She thanked me for the conversation, and how I made her feel much better for lack of racism in the state of GA.
I now wonder what happened to her.

I don't know about England, but here in America they would think that it was a racist attack if a Black person attacked a White person. In fact, not less than 50 years ago, a Black person would get killed if they talked back to a White person or didn't do what they said. Nobody should hurt anybody for the color of their skin, and I don't agree with you that Black people get off scot free for doing things. I don't see how white people have to be careful about what they say these days either. It's always been that way for minorities. I think now the being careful about what you say means not to use racial slurs and degrade other races. And it's possible that white people are a little guilty about what went on in the past - that could account for them walking on egg shells. People are not walking all over you. There are still alot of people that think that white people are at the top. You guys still have alot of clout over everyone else, but have you ever thought about all the years that other races have been walked all over. Surely the things you are talking about aren't half as bad.

I went on to do this first job I've ever had. My job was to sell food to customers [ at this event ] .. even cook, if it were to get too packed/crowded with people. From time to time there would be passive-aggressive/aggressive disputes with my other co-workers ... probably cause of the working pressure... sometimes, or most of the time, I'd just end up feeling hopeless with them.. me... but somehow, I manage to get pass it whenever one or two customers manage to pass this 'genuine' smile to me.. like they mean it, in a way, lol... i'd always feel lifted after that... like that person actually understood me. and I would always remember this one little boy... I was trying to put food on the plate for him, the plate was made out of foam, so I found a piece of it hanging on the food... I tried to get it out for him by using this tweezer-like object [ it was big ], but had a hard time doing it as I wasn't also allowed to touch the food with my hand? ...so the boy leaned in forward and took it out for me and then smiled... i think it was ever rarely that i was able to pass on a 'genuine' smile back to him.. or a person.. when all this time I thought I had no energy left in me to smile like that again...

My best friend, who turned into that AFTER high school, not during, (we were just normal friends during) got me out of trouble with a particularly harsh teacher at the time. My parents would have seen it as "the final straw" had I gotten into trouble and it was her that saved me from it. :)
