Actually, as much as I love spoiling my rats rotten, those large pet stores, Petsmart, Petcetera, Petland, Super Pets, etc. carry products that are way more expensive then smaller pet stores. Yes, these stores have a wonderful variety of things to choose from...but they're not cheap.

Rats can have fun with even the cheapest of toys, free even. Most "toys" can be found around your own home.
Try your "Dollar Stores" for straws, popcicle sticks, those little toys in the children's section.
I'm constantly checking out garage sales for stuff that I can use for my rats.

I wouldn't use cans for my rats as I'm concerned about the edges that are sharp. Toilet paper rolls can be contaminated, if ya know what I mean.

Lids from milk or juice jugs, empty paper towel rolls, empty tissue boxes, empty boxes, PCV pipe,..........

You know those pet igloos are expensive? I buy my ratty huts from my Superstore for $2.99 each. These "huts" are actually those plastic stackable storage bins turned upside down.

I use cloth bedding for my rats that I buy at the Salvation Army.

I make up my own rat food from ingredients I buy at the grocery stores.

Buy what you can cheap and then go to the pet stores for your staples.

I know there is so much more to tell you but I should keep my answer short.

You don't have to BUY things, use things from home if you can. Like the plastic coffee cans, they LOVE to sleep in those, of an old pair of cut up jeans, they love to nest in these, and they are durable, so if they chew them, they will last. Toilet paper tubes, or paper towel tubes, great chew toy. Look around, YOU have great things in your house. Just think to yourself "is this non toxic, and is this safe". But if you want other stuff, I think PetsMart is the best place, with the best selection. Shoe boxes make great beds, and take those "giant legos" and fill them up with treats (down inside the holes) it gives them hours of entertainment.

if you have rats, the party is over. i had a rat problem, and i had to move. it got so bad, that one night, i woke up, and a rat was crawling under my sheets. then, two nights later, i woke up, and a rat was crawling on my face. just move away, thats the only hope you have, if the babies dont end up going with you somehow.
