Chi Sox, Tigers & Indians can all pack a punch.. so how will the Twins fair with a recession of talent on the mound?

The Twins always find a way to stay competitive; despite the fact they play for a bargain basement owner who sure appears to have one foot in the grave already and the other foot hovering over a banana peel. Carl Pohlad's what in his nineties? The Twins farm system is a model of how to develop players from within an organization.

GM Terry Ryan knows he only has so much money to work with as far as player's salaries go; so he does his darndest to make the most out of a limited payroll budget.

To answer the question, I think the Twins have every chance of repeating as AL Central champs. They have the best closer in the game in Joe Nathan.

The Twins always find a way to compete because they have a solid farm system. No one pitcher can replace Liriano, and Radke showed a lot of guts last year pitching with an injury, but by mid May when Glen Perkins and Matt Garza are both set in the rotation people will see how deep the Twins pitching is. Both will be stars. Plus they have the best pither in the bigs in Santana and a dominant bullen anchored by the best closer outside of Mo in NY. The White Sox have taken a few steps back, losing McCarthy and possibly losing Uribe. And the Indians can hit but are poor in pitching and defense. It will come down to the Twins and the Tigers, and while I like the Tigers young pitchers and the addition of Sheffield, I think it will be close. The Twins still have some offensive firepower in the middle of the lineup. Plus with the loser of the race will still have a shot at the wild card against the loser of the BoSox Yanks race.

Garza, Boof, Perkins...sure they're not Liriano and Radke, but they are solid. The one thing many people forget is the pitching staff is supported by one of the best defenses in the league, THAT is the determining factor!

That being said, I feel the tigers are just too strong and will finish 10 games ahead of the Twins and White Sox.

Us twins fans seem to lean on Santana for our playoff hopes, but remember he will at the most win 20 games! That leaves another 80 games that we need to win to be in contention.

I think the White Sox made a big mistake trading McCarthy, though Denks could be good.

That's a good question. In what's become the toughest division in the Al, the Twins do certainly have issues this year. With the retirement of Radke and with Liriano coming off major surgery, the Twins need pitching help, fast. The offense should be again very consistent with Mauer and Morneau signing big contracts, but Pitching wins championships. The Tigers will take this division.

I'm afraid that since the above occurred (Radke retiring and Liriano injured) plus the fact that every other team in the division have improved themselves, the Twins will really struggle to reach a .500 record. Its hard even to replace one pitcher of their calibre, but to try to replace two and then improve even more I think is out of the question. I think they should rebound nicely next year, since Liriano will be back and that will then give them two very good pitchers and a couple of the young guys will have one year of experience added and then the Twins can concentrate on just getting one more solid starter.

They don't survive. The Twins had a tough time of it last year, and I cannot see any improvement which will offset the additions made to the Tigers or the Indians. Plus Chicago remains a force in the division as well. They will be fighting like mad just to stay in the race, and this year I just have trouble seeing them pull it off.

They won't. Tigers will win going away! Twins are in deep do-do with their pitching and the Indians don't know how to win. The White Sox are yesterday's news. Lucky if they finish over .500. It will be the Tigers and Yankees who will decide the AL pennant.

It will be harder for the Twins this year. But they still have a balanced lineup (one of the best in baseball really), and the best closer in the game.
The twins also have Bonser and Garza, and they should improve also. They do have to play in the toughest division in baseball, but I think they and Chicago will compete for the division / wildcard. The main reason - that dome they call home evens out a lot.
