It's just a term of endearment. She's your baby you trust her to perform or get you where you need to be.

Not all are female's. But, most are. When the first car was built the women didn't drive. The men done all the driving. It was a man's place to drive the car, as it was a woman's place to keep the house clean, take care of the children, have dinner ready. So, most likely, on a cold winter morning some guy was getting ready for work and his car didn't want to start. As he was trying to start the car he was saying "C'mon girl, you can do it." or something like that. I know some woman who have named there cars. Bessy, and Betsy are popular car names.

I think there is more to it that i'm going to tell you but in my opinion that ladies are a symbol of good luck. Luck be a lady tonight...An expensive car had a silver lady on the bonnet. During WW 2 the US sailors kept a photo of Betty Grable on the wall. A famous US bomber had a lady painted on it The Memphis Belle. There was an ocean liner with the name of a sea goddess. Of course they could be something to do with beauty but I have'nt seen any boats with names like Venus but I have seen boats that are named Sea Wife or Mermaid.

Maybe because we're kept safe in their 'bellies' until it's time for us to re-enter the world?
Actually, I think sailors used to be all male, and had no closer relationship than with their ship. I suppose it's a term of affection. 'Married to the sea' so to speak?
In that sense it probably makes perfect sense for a female to call her ship/car/whatever a he...
