12 answers

-4(x - 9) + 2x = 3x - 14

Expand the bracket
-4x + 36 + 2x = 3x - 14

Group like terms
-2x + 36 = 3x - 14

Put all x's on one side of the equals, all numbers on the other
50 = 5x

Simplify
x = 10

Multiply out brackets first.

-4x + 36 + 2x = 3x - 14

Then add the -4x and the 2x on the left hand side.

36 - 2x = 3x - 14

Swap the -2x to the right hand side, where it becomes +2x, and the -14 to the left hand side, where it becomes + 14.

36 + 14 = 3x + 2x.

Add these together.

50 = 5x.

Divide both sides by 5 to get

10 = x

x = 10.

Finally, to check, substitute x = 10 into original equation.

-4 (10-9) + 2(10) = 3(10) - 14.

Left hand side is -4(1) + 20 = -4 + 20 = 16.

Right hand side is 30 - 14 = 16.

So it works.

Rewriting , you have -4x+36 +2x= 3x -14, adding like terms and transposing terms, you have, -4x -3x +2x= -36 + (-14)= -5x=-50, miltiplying each side of the equation by -1, you have 5x=50, or x=10
