I want to add calcite to my well to try to raise the pH level of our water. Do you just lift the cover off and dump it in, or is there some set of steps to doing this? I've never lived in a house with a well before, so I'm a little clueless.

You could just pour it down the well but it would be a very short term fix the best way is to have a treatment system If you have a water softener it a treatment device could be added to it if you don't have a softener maybe you need one check the yellow pages usually they will test your water for free and recommend the type of system you need try several companies before deciding what you want to do

We had to sanitize ours once because of bacteria. We just poured in a gallon of bleach. At the cover spot as you suggest. I was shocked. I had never heard of this. And a gallon of bleach is not that much in a well when it's all mixed in. So I'd say that's your best bet.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCE DUMP ANYTHING DOWN YOUR WELL YOU COULD CONTAMINATE THE WATER SUPPLY.THE ONLY PERSON WHO SHOULD DO WELL WORK IS A CERTIFIED WELL DRILLER. IF YOU EVEN ACCIDENTALLY CONTAMINATED THE WATER SUPPLY, THE FINES YOU WOULD PAY WOULD PUT YOU IN THE POOR HOUSE FOREVER. NOT EVEN CONSIDERING ALL THE OTHER AREA WELLS THAT YOU WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR TO BE RE-DRILLED AND CASED OFF FROM THE CONTAMINATED WATER.
