I grow all my own herbs for cooking because they taste better
"just picked".

In the summer, I have an organic vegetable garden. I don't have a lot of room, so I focus on my favorites: Tomatoes, Lettuce, peppers, broccoli, squash, and pumpkins for fall. Whatever I don't use I give to neighbors, colleagues, and friends.

I grow my veggies because:

1. It's fun
2. They taste better
3. It's better for the environment
4. It saves money

As for fresh eggs, I don't ever get those, but I do buy a side a beef each Spring from a friend who farms. I do this because I know where the meat is coming from and the quality of the animal (both how it was fed and how it was treated).

We own 17 acres and have a barn with Hereford cows that will eventually be beef after they breed for 6 or 7 years. We have a chicken house and about 20 hens with fresh eggs everyday( my kids sell them or I give them to a local food bank when we have too many)we have a veggie garden in the summer with a variety of veggies. I have s strawberry bed and grow and freeze them or make jam. I am working on getting my blueberry bushes more established. My husband cuts wood for fire for the winter that has helped a lot with fuel consumption. We have all these things but we still have to work and go to the grocery store. To really be more self sufficient we would have to expand and have more of everything to sell for income and it isn't all that profitable so we just do as much as we can for our own needs.

I am also a pensioner with a large garden and I have just advertised for somebody to help me with my garden in exchange for the use the the vegetable plot which I don't use myself. They get to keep all the produce from the patch in exchange for helping me with pruning, a bit of weeding etc.

I have 7 chickens, @ 5 eggs a day, I use a heat lamp, and buy processed feed for them(my bad), I love my asparagus, strawberries, rasperries, apples, rubarb, cherries, sorrel, blueberries I grow, but they are weedy but self sufficient(north wisconsin) I like the taste of open range chickens(they help so much with bugs, and mice, yes they eat mice!) and get along with my cats. I only have 2 1/2 acreas.

I've got 1/2 block in the city. I can't do some of the things you listed. I've gotten rid of my grass and have bark and ever so often Native plants throughout. Its rather maintenance-free.
