William Shakespeare because during the tough period of tyranny of the contemporary king he wrote all most interesting dramas in poetry.

Well, strictly speaking, it has to be Shakespeare, But, soft! what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun. Arise, fair sun, and kill the envious moon, Who is already sick and pale with grief, That thou her maid art far more fair than she. Be not her maid, since she is envious; Her vestal livery is but sick and green And none but fools do wear it; cast it off. It is my lady, O, it is my love! O, that she knew she were! But if you stretch the point a bit and say Shakespeare was a playwright, then I'd vote for Wordsworth as the greatest English poet, I wandered lonely as a cloud That floats on high o'er vales and hills, When all at once I saw a crowd, A host, of golden daffodils; Beside the lake, beneath the trees, Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

I think that the greatest english poet of all time is william shakespear. He's known by almost everyone even if they don't know his poems or plays. little kids know who he is and what he does. But if you're the scary type you might want to look more into edgar allan poe. I know this is lame but my fave poem from adgar allan poe is The Raven.

In terms of importance and my own personal tastes, I'd go with Geoffery Chaucer. He was a great help in turning the English language from the common vernacular of the peasant into an acceptable artistic tool.

Lord Byron's my pick for English poet...
But since you have now amended your question to include any great work I love T.S. Eliot's "The Wasteland" and "The Hollow Men."
Also Arthur Rimbaud's "Eternity"; Conrad Aiken's "House of Dust"; and Allen Ginsberg's "Howl."
