Believe it or not, some fish will freeze completely in ice and thaw out and be fine in the spring.

Nothing. THe fish will retreat to the deeper part of the pond. During a typical winter Ice in the norther parts of the US does not reach any thicker than 18". As of the past 10 years lake averages were less than 12. (Unless you are near the great lakes or Canada)

the fish will swim under the frozen lake/river...some unlucky ones will probable be interior the incorrect place on the incorrect time, yet for many they're going to circulate on w/their favourite exercises. apart from those few that ice fish, they're safer while the exterior is robust. between the reward to all existence it fairly is often taken with none attention is the common chemistry of ice vs. water. thankfully for us ice is way less dense than water. meaning ice floats and would not sink. while the H-o-H freezes air wallet are created b/c of the "frozen state," the molecules quit shifting. Now think of if frozen water sunk the rivers and seas? What would take place? confirm you communicate the intensity of the sea and the way plenty image voltaic penetrates the decrease point.

Wild fish are not as delicate as you might think, when the lake or pond freezes they descend to lower levels where water is warmer and live off fat from overeating in the fall. By the time their weight falls it is spring and the ice is gone.

In Japan, they do keep koi outdoors even in winter but as far as I know, the water does not freeze over. I really do not know of anyone who leaves koi out in a pond which freezes over. Koi are not like indigenous fish that have evolved to hibernate or slow down their metabolic rate during winter. You are really risking the possibility of losing your koi. I'd recommend you get a large tank or plastic/artificial tank that you can keep indoors or outdoors (with a heater) if your koi is really valuable to you.

You need to have a pump to keep the water moving and a hole in the ice. If your pond is completely frozen over with no air hole the trapped gases will kill your koi.

SPELL CHECK, please.

It depends on the fish, and how much water is left which is not frozen.
