All the answers swearing to the need for study miss a valid point.. Does education make a man more refined and useful to himself, the family and society? The harsh fact is that most crimes are done by "educated" people... because education has come to mean acquisition of some label - a diploma or degree - for claiming a job, rather than develop useful (ethical) values...

Almost all schools claim that they give primacy to the "overall development" of their students but apart from the common prayer and some occassional yoga classes etc, there is not even an encouragement to learn values like selfless service to the poor, respect for elders and the handicapped, a taste for fine arts etc. Some schools do some community service on a chosen day or go collecting money at public places for Flag Day stamps etc. Students who already know some music or dance through their parents or special home coaching, perform in the school functions; similarly for the sports - no regular coaching at all. The PT teachers demonstrate some drills and allow students to play the game of their choice - because there will not be sufficient play material for all the 100s of students... Some aggressive boys and girls get the play materials and play regularly so that they can go for interschool matches etc... The alround development is of this category only in most schools.. Perhaps the position is different in a rare luxury school - no one can even peep into most schools - the stone walls do not permit even parents see the performance of the wards except in a public function - stage managed with a few brilliant children...

Study for your bread, for your status, for your satisfaction of being one among people... else you may appear akwardly different from others - as if you are a moron, though you may be more cultured than the "educated" vandals who "rag" their fellow students, create violence in the school / college campus / public places (bus or rail stations - if there is a delay in starting a vehicle on scheduled time etc)... IF this is all the outcome of a formal study then where is the need for it !

As per ethics, the saints and philosophers ask us to be calm and to accept what is destined to us. All are dying at last. But for the survival in this materialistic world social status and money are vital. Social status comes with studies and power. So Study to improve oneself is needed. With out the basic requirements like food, conveniences, you cannot sit on meditation to bring the maturity to accept what is destined to us.
