Some predictions just don't hold up to real world tests. Maybe with greater technology in composite materials someday this will come true.

Actually there are several people working on various types.
Moller's Skycar (www.moller.com) is a VTOL design, but not really good on the road, and requires a lot of infrastructure to be created along with it.
My neighbor happens to be this guy...www.labicheaerospace.com
And he's building the FSC-1. It's a sports car that converts into a plane. The amount of research he's done is astounding and there isn't any new infrastructure that needs to be created. Solid design and using existing infrastructure. The first "full" scale model is going to be finished this year. Hopefully I can help when I have free time!
Feel free to write me if you have more questions about either.

There was weight vs strength problem with an aircar. One at least was built, but taking the wings off when it landed was a real bind.
These days, we have excellent high tech recreational aircraft with removable wings. You can keep them in your garage. With one of those, who wants a great lumbering aircar?

I totally agree. I want that and my own robot maid, a sexy robot maid at that! Don't get me wrong. I would not do anything inappropriate with the robot maid . . .
