OK, so I have my new guinea pigs. They came home at lunchtime on Sunday and have been observing me from the pen with an expression that clearly indicates they think I'm nuts, and am definitely not to be trusted! I've bought them a bag of timothy hay which is being hoovered up at an extraordinary rate from within said pen, but I'm a little confused. Should I offer 'regular' standard hay in their sleeping quarters and timothy hay in the manger, or is it desirable to provide timothy hay throughout? Also, what constitutes Timothy hay? When I have contacted feed merchants re bales they just say "we have hay". Helpful.

we got three guinea pigs last year they eat none stop!!they do prefer tho timothy hay with herbs in from pets at home.i put regular hay in their bed and the better stuff where they will eat and not sleep in it.they love eating cucumber best.apple (not too much it can burn their mouth)spring cabbage they like more than round cabbage.parsnip, carrots, pellet food with vitamin c included so they cant selective graze.oh and i may be able to save you a vet bill here(found out after i paid my vet bill!!)if your pigs get white scaly skin on their ears its fungal infection usually can sometimes be ringworm.anyway you can either do as i did and pay vet£40 and still counting cos treatment wasn't working,or do as i researched on google and buy a tube of canestan cream rub it between your fingers to warm it or they jump and then apply every day.it works!go onto google and you will find a wealth of info on your pigs including answers on your hay.do not give them straw as they can damage their eyes with it.hay serves as bedding and food so you need to top it up a lot.

Basically Timothy hay is cultivated grass hay, as apposed to standard meadow hay, grass hay combined with a pelleted guinea pig diet meets there requirements better than standard hay, as for bedding i have previously used various inc. hay, straw and others, but i wouldnt personally use timothy hay on the floor, would just keep it in the rack so they dont spend their time eating soiled bedding, also a small amount of natural greenfood such as dandelion leaves is desirable, as they can suffer from viamin deficiency, which in my first ones led to twisted gut, not nice!

I think you should get them 'normal' hay for starters. Then, later on, you may want to get them 'hay for pros' or whatever they call it. What kind of bedding did they have when you bought them? A good pet store should know a lot about their pets' bedding.
