I love building custom PCs, and I almost know what I want until it comes to choosing the right motherboard.

Because the motherboards' architecture of electronic components is the most complex, it's very hard to determine which one is the most stable, especially when most reviews are performance (probably speed) oriented, and not long-term quality oriented.

So tell me about your personal experience or expertise in choosing a motherboard, which brand is your favorite (and why)?

Finally my main question is should we trust a brand name and stick to it as long as it's good, or read performance biased-reviews to make a buying decision?

Personal experience:
After a bad personal experience with an Asus motherboard, I started to be meticulous in choosing other manufacturers with *longer* history and experience. Yet when I search online for best custom gaming PCs I see that Asus is much favored.

ASUS are the best brand motherboard. I wouldn't mind choosing brand like EC, PC, or some other brands that I can't think clearly on top of my head.

You need to find a good supplier that actually test parts before shipping it. Don't buy things from AS-IS as they don't care about testing it.

My future motherboard would be a AM2 socket. I tell you why because they offer system memory's bandwith 3 times stronger and faster than other motherboard socket.

Actually I bought a couple MSI boards 2 years back and haven't had a problem yet. I also have a Gigabyte board for my P4 which has been great so far. I have seen some problems with ASUS boards at work which is why I stay away from them.

From my experience in talking to people you usually get what you pay for, no matter the brand. A high priced ASUS may be better constructed than my MSI boards and therefore last longer, in which case ASUS would be better. Get it? Good.

I think that was a fluke with the asus..theyre some of the best...stay away from ecs or pc chips...absolute garbage and customer service is nonexistant. my suggestion is to stay with any intel 845g based. theyre usually green and will say intel on them although they have sometimes bios codes instead of id numbers. basic drivers and kick butt support.
