First off, lavender is very difficult to grow from seed. I recommend getting a piece from a friend since it is easy to split and transplant. If you don't have a friend, buy a couple nice gallon plants from your local nursery.

I personally do not grow roses because I don't have the patience. They are easy to plant and keep alive... but having them bloom is an art that requires time and practice. To have a beautiful rose garden, you need to learn about soil pH and fertilizers.... there is no better time to start reading up then now!

As for your herb garden... I recommend having two... an indoor and outdoor garden. I live in Nebraska, so we have similar climates. I have an indoor herb garden year round and have an outdoor herb garden from May until it freezes.

Most herbs are easy to start from seeds. You can use as many combinations as you would like. Also, since herbs are picked for daily use, don't worry about crowding... they will do fine.

Your window boxes will be perfect for your outdoor garden. For indoor, you can get creative, use clay pots or plastic pots. If you want a large indoor garden at a low cost, I have used a plastic storage containers. They are much cheaper than flower pots and look the same. Just be sure to poke a few holes in the bottom.

Water a few times a week and you'll do just fine!

You're gonna need shade. Most herbs don't like direct sunlight. But they do seem to like heat. You're also going to get bugs. Some actually help the plant...others just attract bigger bugs and predators. Don't buy from Wal*Mart...that's all I have to say.
And if you have pets, keep them away, away, I say! Cats love herbs. They think they can eat anything!
You just stated that you live in Minnesota: you need to get transportable pots. You can't plant in-soil. Herbs need heat. Cold kills them pretty fast.

i know when we started our own little herb garden (i live in AZ) we HAD to put up a little sun shade over them so they did not receive the direct sunlight and kill them. so that might be something you want to start. put a sun screen over the top of the garden you want the start, make sure u have good, healthy, moist soil, water it all the time at least 2 times a day, and make sure to keep those weeds out of it!

*also dont forget to put miracle grow on all your plants when you first start it and monthly from then on!*

Don't over-water them - that's the most common reason herbs die. In general, herbs like to be on the dry side. Water them only when the soil is dry.

Plant your seeds now ,allow them to germinate in the house ,then prick them out into seperate pots. Put them out side after the frosts. They will look lovely in coloured pots.
