Ingrown hairs are caused by regrowth that curls up under your skin and can't find its way out of the pore. Shaving makes your hairs come back stronger and thicker, making it harder for them to pass through. When you shave, you are also taking the top layer off your skin. Now that you have stopped shaving, the skin is getting tougher and the hairs find it harder to grow out. Things you can do to prevent it are:
a) drink plenty of water (it helps your pores work harder to release more water and guides the hairs in the right direction)
b) Exfoliate - it takes the top surface off the skin revealing the soft skin underneath and helps hairs pass through)
c) I have been using a product called skin doctors ingrow-go, it's quite expensive but really works well, it takes layers off your skin when you wipe, allowing the hair to pass through more easily and it cleans up the infected area. It is a quick fix to your problem where the other two options take longer to start working. I hope this helps!!!

You are probably using a razor to shave. Razors can cause a lot of ingrown hairs because they shave so close. The razor pulls at the hairs. The hairs lift up out of the skin. Then, some of them go back under the skin and become ingrown hairs. It's better to use an electric shaver with a foil screen because that type of shaver doesn't pull at the hairs the way a razor does. Ingrown hairs are always caused by shaving to close to the skin. An electric shaver will cause ingrown hairs too if you press the electric shaver to your skin in an attempt to get a closer shave. You are supposed to let the electric shaver glide over your skin.

Well this is mainly b/c when the hair is shaved it is below the skin. After it starts grow the hair can get trapped under the skin and cause the ingrown hair. The ingrown hair can also break the skin and cause them as well. They are funny like that. The easiest way to make them go away it to tweeze it out. Or make sure that all of the fluid in the ingrown hair as been released. Good luck!

I have been told that ingrown hairs are caused by cutting off a hair below skin level e.g. when pulling the skin taught when shaving. I suppose this is likely as anything.

Because the hairs are scared that you might start shaving again...hence, they are trying to hide.
