I want one that can do a large load and wash a double quilt. Can you recommend one with a good energy rating and reliability - good after sales service please? I'd also like a half load function if possible.

To be honest, the best buys are Miele, however they can be quite expensive. If you want one that would last a long time, I would say Bosch. They are relatively quiet, cheap to run and have quite a large load capacity. They would cost around the £350.00 mark. Have a look at the Bosch WFX 2868. It scored 63% on WHICH!. The next best was AEG-Electrolux L64810. I can't tell you much about these as I have never had one, it scored 65%.

I wanted to answer here, to say that my sister had a Bosch washing machine and dishwasher both of which broke several times. The washing machine door kept sticking and the hole to push the clothes into, was really small!! I didnt think it was worth the money at all.

My last two machines have been indesit. I had one for seven years at my last home, it never went wrong. I have had the one at my present home for nine years and it was three years old when I got it, Ive nevr had any probs. It is a very basic model and I think that is the beauty of Indesit, less fancy stuff to go wrong. I have crammed a double quilt in it, but it didnt wash well. When I am replacing this one, I will definitely be buying a top loading automatic machine like they have in the US. They hold much more, are far quicker and you can add in stray socks etc after the wash has begun lol.

No matter how big a drum you get in a front loading machine, its never going to wash a double duvet properly, even some launderette machines struggle with that. But given you can buy a double duvet for a tenner, or put a protector on a new one, why bother?

My father used to build Industrial Washing Machines and he has always advised me to buy German......i.e. Miele, Bosch etc.

We have a Bosch which hasnt given us a problem in 6 years. He has a Miele which is over 10 years old and has been fine.

Having had a look in Which, they recommend Miele and Bosch as well. I would have a look on Comet / Currys etc to find one with the features you are after and then do a price comparison search to find where you can get it for the best price.

Miele and Bosch have to be the best on the market - best to check out the features and prices on Kelkoo which will give you the best price for the model you want.

I have all Bosch white goods and have done so for 10 years (replacing one after 6 years so not bad) - I don't have a bad word to say about them - they are superior. The call out service is great too - if you purchase from somewhere like John Lewis they give you 2 years cover for breakdown and free delivery - but its likely you will pay more.

I bought mine for that purpose. It doens't do half loads, though. LG IntelloWasher 7 kg.
I bought it with a five year guarantee and have had to have the bearings replaced. My husband is a domestic appliance technician and he suggested the guarantee because he finds changing the electronics a real problem and expensive.
I have no problem washing double duvets in it.
