You have an interesting ability. I don't know if prevalence studies have been done on such a phenomenon. I don't have that ability to any significant degree, as far as I know.
My dreams tend to have to do with things that are unresolved or problematic in my life, and have occupied a significant amount of my conscious mind, which we're told is only about 30% of our mental capacity.

Dreams are a function of our unconscious mind, which is thought to be about 70% of our total mental capacity, and whose functions are to tirelessly, night and day, serve and protect us. In the waking state an example is driving a car for a certain distance to our destination without afterwards being able to consciously recall details of having done so. This is not uncommon. Dreaming is another way our unconscious mind serves us, ‘working on’ our ‘issues’ for us and often in the morning presenting us with a clearer view of an issue, if not a clear solution.

The relationship between these two aspects of our mind seems to be the conscious mind setting the directions, goals, etc., and the unconscious mind using its vast powers to achieve them, and protect us. People usually don't consciously give such clear directions to their unconscious mind, so usually in dreams it's only exploring 'issues' we have in our waking state, in whatever way it chooses, resulting in 'undirected' dreaming. In the above example, of driving to a destination ‘unconsciously’, the conscious mind has first made the decision of where the driver wants to go, and then ‘tunes out’ to other things, so the unconscious mind takes over, operating the body and senses so as to achieve that objective. Similar evidence of the unconscious mind working for us in the waking state is in sports situations, where athletes are said to be ‘unconscious’ when they’re playing beyond their normal best.

You seem to have some way of providing clear direction to your unconscious mind about your hopes and aspirations, allowing it to dream in a directed way about what you want to 'see' happen in your life. I'm curious to know how you go about doing that. I suspect you tend to be very definite in your ideas, making firm resolutions, not letting yourself get too confused about things that concern you. Is that so?

My mental processes in the waking state have more to do with coming to understand something as completely as possible, and allowing myself a considerable degree of 'confusion' to that end, thinking that if I cut it off too soon with a firm decision I'd be missing out on the 'whole truth'. The result is being more susceptible to influence, manipulation and uncertainty of mind; and relatively undirected dreamwork by my unconscious mind. I'm not sure that I want to change that, as much as I envy your ability, and suspect that it is akin to that of great leaders throughout history who have been reported as having persistent and powerful dreams.

I also understand that we are able to recall only a small portion or number of our dreams, so I suspect you may have many that you’re not aware of, that may surprise you, but you just don’t recall them.

Yes, I know when I'm dreaming that it's a dream...

No, I can't change nightmares into something else...

I've had repetitive dreams and, in them, I take a lesser quality (a big wind will come along and blow me off the sidewalk) into flying around and fighting crime...

I know there's Directed Dreaming that addresses certain aspects or archetypes in the dreams, but I've read what Jung wrote about it happening during the day - - more like a daydream...

When I realize it's a dream, I can switch one venue to another -- but not like you turn nightmares around...it's a great gift you've got!

What are you describing here is 'lucid dreaming' or 'astral projecting' and it's a skill anyone can develop through little training :) or is a natural, like you maybe.
To answer your question, yes, I sometimes get the 'I must be dreaming' feeling, but I haven't yet mastered the technique. I read about it though and I recommend you do the same.

A lot of people can control their dreams or at the least have dreams where they know that they are dreaming.

I used to manipulate my dreams to be how I wanted but now I leave my subconscious to take me where ever it wants to - the outcomes are always far more entertaining and unexpected, and it's a wonderful thing to wake up laughing!

Happy dreaming!

What you are doing is called Lucid Dreaming. Some people say it can be a learned skill and in others it comes naturally. Sounds like fun whichever way it comes about.

There is a forest tribe in Malaysia - the Senoi - called by anthropologist who discovered them as the "dream people". It is part of their upbringing to control their dreams. They talk about their dreams during social and family gatherings as if it is part of their waking life. They are also taught to dream about beautiful and pleasant things. You should read Kilton Steward's "Dream Theory in Malaya" to find out.

The Senoi of Malaysia is a whole community of people able to do what you are doing with your dreams.

I use to be able to do this, it has been along time. I never really discussed it with anyone, but I read an article about it once asking for people who did it/could (years ago). I don't know much about it other than I use to do it and felt that if I told someone, they'd think I was a true NuT!! hmmm
