depends on where you are staying city wise.kuala lumpar or are you travelling around the malays are very generous and kind people.my wife and i have holidayed in malaysia for the past five year.at kota kinabalu.there is lots to see the oceans are beautiful especially from the islands.one word of caution.there are pickpockets.last year a friend we travelled with had her handbag slashed and purse stolen.if you are going to get money changed,do not do it on the ground.where exits are easily available.do it in the bigger department stores and then shop for awhile.a bit offputting i guess.but that has been the only incident we have ever had,in malaysia.go enjoy your holiday youll have a great time.food is not a problem, very tasty never been ill

Define problems? Down in JB there are quite a few purse snatching and other petty theft going on, typical tourist pray bits, but nothing violent.
I've felt a little discord from time to time with anti-american politics, like when I lost my passport and had to go to the US embassy while there was an anti-US rally right outside of the embassy, which was a few years back. Generally I find warm welcomes, and great people though.
Generally I feel safer in Malaysia than I do most places in the world, even compared to my home in California. There is no way in hell I'd go outside by myself in San Jose, while I commonly am found gallivanting about in Malaysia by myself, whether it be Ipoh, Penang, KL or even JB.
Not a problem per say, definitely not to me, but I do get stared at quite often. When I visit our plant in Ipoh and walk through the test floor, I feel like a piece of meat, but a 6'+ tall blonde hair blue eyed 3pc suit wearing quai lo(red haired devil :p) stands out a bit.

I used to visit their capital city, KL. I have a ride on their taxi. There was once a crazy taxi driver who drove his car so fast and don't even follow the traffic rules. Sat on his car I cannot fall asleep. His car was dirty. Anyway this doesn't mean every taxi drivers are like this, some of them do clean up their taxi and treat their customer nicely.
Beside this, be sure to use the toilet inside the hotel. The toilet in the hotel is much more better than the toilet in public place. Toilet in the public place is kinda crowded and dirty. There was once a time I walked along their food stores. Although I told them I don't want to eat, they hustled me to have a meal inside their store. I don't know what to do but to walk in. It just like they forced me to spend money inside their store without saying any thank you word. There were pets left alone without master along the street especially the dirty back street. well this is against the law in my country, consider as animal abuse. I am not sure whether pets without owner will be send to a caring center in malaysia but I hope there is.

1. Reckless cab drivers - over charge, so make sure they have the meter on.
2. Filthy toilets - BYO, not liquor but tissue or wet napkins.
3. There's no 3rd problem.
However, it's Visit Malaysia Year 2007 and the problems mentioned are being solved.

My main problem in Malaysia was that most of the restrooms had no toilet paper; I had to carry it with me everywhere I went.
It's a great place to visit! Have a good time!

I would have to say the 'most common problems tourists experience' is having to go back home after a great holiday in Malaysia :-)

KL taxi drivers.
During rush hours or when it's raining, they mysteriously disappear.
Make sure their meters are switched on. Otherwise, agree to the price first before entering their taxis.
Better still, make use the monorail or LRT.
