Hi,

I wonder what is the different between the following two sentences which either uses the "or" or the word "and"

1 any piece of software which runs on the server computer or the client computer must be monitored.

2 any piece of software which runs on the server computer AND the client computer must be monitored.

Is there any different in terms of meaning ?
Which one means all software either running on the server computer or the client computer must be monitored?

Thanks !

The 2nd means that there is only need to monitor if the software is running on both the server & client ie if it is just running on just one the the inference is that there is no need to monitor.
The 1st sentence means that if the software is running on either both or only one computer (regardless of whether this is a server or client computer) then there is a need to monitor.

Sentence two could be construed as meaning that the software must be running on both the server and client computer concurrently.

Sentence one conveys the correct message.

1) says it simply where the software is installed on either the server or the client PC.

2) says it's on both the server and the client PC.

Number 1 is the one you want.

1. would mean ALL Software,

2. would mean a Client-Server package. IE. Anti virus updated by the central server. (Which in turn would recieve updates from Symantec or McAfee etc etc)

OR means...one or the other. If it runs on either one of those...it must be monitored.

And means....if it runs on BOTH ...it must be monitored.

yes, and the second one.
obviously you know that "or" means "either" or "otherwise", and "and" is "in addition".
