I am giving my girlfriend a key for valentines day, not the key to my apartment, but a key to my heart. Does this sound like a good idea or is it a bit too cheesy?

It is a key on a silver chain. And there is other stuff, but this is the main thing.

its bordering on cheesy and sweet.
just stand by it defend it. be extra confident and extra prepared when you give it to her so she would feel like you really mean to give the key to your heart.
my mom got a gigantic key from her boyfriend in college. it was 2 feet long, metal and very heavy. we have it displayed in our house even if the person who gave this key isn't her husband. :)
don't be embarrassed to give your sweet gift as long as it comes from your heart

I think yours is an excellent gift. Is it an actual key which symbolizes the "key" to your heart? If so, you might consider putting it on a pretty ribbon or a key chain, Not cheesy at all. Very creative thinking. How about taking her to see Music & Lyrics with Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore? That should be a very funny, romantic comedy to help cap off your evening. Maybe a wee little box of nice chocolates or a stuffed puppy dog wearing that key ? Sound good? Well, alrighty then.

If it is something like a key on a necklace, then it sounds very nice. But it can't be just any ol' key, it has to be nice looking, obviously.

well i'm a girl,and as a girl i think that is nice but kind of funny. maybe she'll just smile and thank you. but if your relationship is good you should know wether it's the right gift or not.
