Very true. Like in Saudi Arabia for instance. Even if you are not burping after eating, means you disrespect the cook. You have to really burp to show some gratitude to the cook.
This doesn't mean people could make fun of it.
Because basically it's all about habit and culture only. Why Americans are so obnoxious and irritating in so many ways? So they same for Arabian people in their burping habit.

I don't know about break wind (yuck) but burping loudly after a meal seems to be a compliment in Arab culture.
In movie Ben Hur, after serving Ben Hur a nice dinner, the Arab businessman showed him to burp..

Perhaps this is just a malicious rumor spread by those who have feelings of animosity against some culture or ethnic group of people.
Usually, you don't hear such rumors about some obscure and relatively unknown ethnic group. You hear it about people who for one reason or another are unpopular in your country.
Among Russians who went through war with Germany during World War II, I've heard that Germans are like that. And among westerners, I've heard that Arabs are like that.
But I've met a number of Germans, and I've never seen any one of them behave like that. I've also spent some time among Arabs, and I haven't seen any one of them behave like that either.
