Well, I went to the store and got some nice sweatpants, problem is they didn't have my size.. and I checked other stores, and they didn't have my size (medium). I bought a large, (the sweatpants are 80% cotton and 20% polyester) and I was hoping I could shrink them, the directions say wash on the cold gentle cycle and tumble dry low.

How could I shrink them?

Would it work?

I don't want to return it, its not that big that it doesn't fit.. it just doesn't fit me as well as the mediums. I love the way they look, they were pretty hard to find too. Every store is sold out of them....

i don't think its worth it getting the larger size (maybe its the fashion gods telling you not to get that pair!). they'll only shrink around 10% in the LENGTH...so it might not really help the waistline as it will be large. even if it does come with a drawstring, it may not help because you may have to bunch it up too much at the top in order for them to stay on. it all depends on how baggy you want them to look, and what are you wearing them for...

Shrinkage is a inbult property in a garment and not desired.
If quality of garments fabric is not good it may shirk to 4-5% but shrinkage by one size from M to L is difficult.Normally shrinkage is below 5%.

one way to shrink is to iron the garment with wet condition but a bit say max 2-3 %.

My daughters always shrink in the tumble dryer, dont tumble on low they are less likely to shrink, tumble on normal setting. It is the length that tends to shrink though
