3 men are checking into a hotel. The receptionist informs them that there is only one room available, for $30 however the room has 3 single beds. The 3 men decide to take the room and split the cost 3 ways and pay $10 each.

After they check-in the receptionist realises that he made a mistake. The rooms are discounted this evening to $25. As a result he's unsure of how to split the $5 refund between the 3 men. So he decides to give the three men $1 each back and keep $2 for himself.

So in total the men paid $27 for the room (3x$9). If the receptionist only kept $2 for himself, where did the last $ go?

1st man paid $10.
2nd man paid $10.
3rd man paid $10.

Now receptionist has $30.

Receptionist gives $1 back to 1st man—still has $29 for the room.
Receptionist gives $1 back to 2nd man—still has $28 for the room.
Receptionist gives $1 back to 3nd man—still has $27 for the room.
Receptionist keeps $2 for himself—still has $25 for the room.

Summary: The men paid $27 for the room, but the receptionist took $2 for himself (greedy little bastid), leaving $25 for the room.

The question is not in the form (3x9)+2 rather it is in the form 30-3-2. See the men pay 30 get one dollar each and the receptionist gets two. The cost of the room is 25 so each man pays nine there is two left over for the receptionist to keep. There is no reason to add the two to the 27 as the 27 accounts for the extra two that the receptionist takes

There is no missing dollar.

1 guy paid 10$ right? There were 3 guys so the total was 30$. The actuall cost was 25$. He give's 1$ away to each person. So now he has 27$. If he keeps 2 for himself, that would be 25 which is the cost of the room. There is no missing dollar.

You have two equations. Subtract the $2 from the 27 and get the $2 change left out of the $5.
30-5=25 then 30-3=27 and 27-2=25

It didn't go anywhere. The men paid $27; $25 for the room, and $2 went in the clerk's pocket. There is no missing dollar.

the two dollars he kept is part of the $27. then the three each got a dollar back. the last sentence is worded funny. that's why it is confusing.

Hope this helps

This is an old riddle. It's been asked here countless times:

In short, there is no "missing" dollar if you do the math correctly.
