If your Desktop has a Network Card get a Cross Clipped cable and use it to connect the Desktop and Network Card.

General USB Cable would have different pins at different ends and it wont work for PC 2 PC cpnnectivity.

You need a USB Data cable which is cross clipped for networking.

Insetad of finding it it would be easy to get a cross clipped RJ45 cable.
