just want to try to make the punishment fit the crime

I would've been grounded for life... but, if you're looking for a punishment to fit the crime, I saw once when a man took his son's mattress out on the front lawn and locked all the doors to the house. If he doesn't want to be home, let him sleep outside for a night. However there could be drawbacks to that; he could just go sleep at his friend's house. So, maybe just a good sentence of grounding..

make him go and volunteer at some local organisation for three weeks. Or maybe have him do chores for you neighbours for three weeks. Or just have him do all of your household chores for three weeks. When I was fifteen, I snuck out and my mother found out. As punishment she grounded me for a month, and made me do all the household chores- while it was extremely annoying at the time, it taught me my lesson, and I have never snuck out since. after that, I used to always let her know where I was going before I went to avoid having to be grounded again. It's important that whatever punishment you do give your child, that you tell him the reasons why he's being punished, and make sure to emphasise the seriousness of his actions. act dissapointed for a while- kids hate it when their parents are dissapointed in them, and will therefore be more likely to think twice before sneaking out again. Good Luck to you!! :)

I don't think grounding him will do all that much because he's already snuck out so take away his mobile and improve security we have this thing where if a door or window is opened at night then the alarm goes off that would work pretty well :P

I like the Tay zar answer. lol. Just kidding.
But seriously though, If I caught my child like that he/she would be grounded for a very long time, and I am not talking about a few weeks. He just showed you that he can't be trusted. He now has to earn that trust back. I would sit down with him and let him know that you can no longer trust him and until he can prove other wise, he is grounded for life.

Lock him out. He will have to wake you to get back into the house, which is when you can punish the sneaky little Dickens!

Ground him. Take away his cellphone and buck up on your security. If he could get out undetected then a thief can get in undetected. This can also prevent future reoccurences.
