Unique style. It's good to have great technique, but Yngwie Malmsten is the most painfully borring thiing on Earth, while a horrible, horrible guitar stand (can't call him a guitarist, really) like Edge made it big - and the only thing he has is his unique style developed because he can't play worth sh*t. And that gave him an advantage - many guitaarists end up playing guitars, not music - Edge didn't have that choice, so his "playing" is all in the function of the songs, which made him really great.

It takes technical potential and an ear for what sounds good. Any previous jackass can play arpeggios sloppily and not even stay *coughhermanlicough* It takes with the flexibility to play annoying guitar artwork rapid and a feeling of musicality. John Petrucci is probable the ideal guitarists in the metallic and rock genres. Pathetically, Herman Li became inspired via John Petrucci. Following up close in the back of Petrucci is Mikael Akerfeldt and then Alexi Leiho.

When he (or she) has reached that point when he and the guitar are one being, the music that comes from it is the sound of his own soul adn the thrum of his life, You can feel that sort of power in your being.

I agree on practice, but consider this too.The great guitarist doesn't try to follow what's popular now. They really should try to create a new, fresh sound.
