I wear a tie for work and do it the 'easy' way - wrapping it over twice then tucking it down. But I remember when I was a kid, my dad used to do it a different way - the 'proper' way.
Does anyone know how to do it??
Thanks :-)

The double Windsor knot:

Start with the wider end of the tie hanging about twice as long as the narrow end of the tie, with the wide end on your right hand side and the narrow end on your left.

Cross the wide end over in front of the narrow end, and the round behind it. Pass the wide end through the loop formed in the tie and tighten. This forms the basis of the knot.

Pass the wide end of the tie behind the knot and back round to the front on the right hand side. Then pass the wide end of the tie through the loop and tighten. You'll now have equal "mini-knots", one on each side of the loop.

Pass the wide end of the tie across in front of both "mini-knots", round the back on the left hand side to form the "face" of the knot and pass it through the loop from behind. Tuck the wide end of the tie under the "face" of the knot and pull down to tighten the knot.

Be sure to tighten evenly and open out the loop of the tie to get a nice shape in the knot. Pull the narrow end of the tie to tighten the loop around the neck.

Single Windsor and Double Windsor is what is common.
The Double Windsor is what you are describing. The Single is loop once and tie. Summer time is single, and cold time is the double. Or some idiotic fashion rule. I do not wear ties anymore, but they are fun.

The link for a bowtie seems to have disappeared, but the page is still there:
