i'm reading a book where everything stops working after an EMP or whatever (Dies the Fire by SM Stirling). I think it wouldn't hurt to have a basic "go here, get food this way" plan for the country. back to survival of the fittest doesn't much appeal to me (being the intellectual that i am).

The term electromagnetic pulse (EMP) has the following meanings:

The electromagnetic radiation from an explosion (especially a nuclear explosion) or an intensely fluctuating magnetic field caused by Compton-recoil electrons and photoelectrons from photons scattered in the materials of the electronic or explosive device or in a surrounding medium. The resulting electric and magnetic fields may couple with electrical/electronic systems to produce damaging current and voltage surges. See Electromagnetic bomb for details on the damages resulting to electronic devices. The effects are usually not noticeable beyond the blast radius unless the device is nuclear or specifically designed to produce an electromagnetic shockwave.
A broadband, high-intensity, short-duration burst of electromagnetic energy.

needless to say, we have appropriate protecting against radiation and stopping any systems from destroying our tech for too long.

Also if you are referring to EMPs in a sci-fi realm, their effects were never permanent

I dont really know very much about this, but i think we should
if someone start to think about this subject will know that almost everything and everyone are depending on the things that make our life more comfort but if something goes wrong, there isnt a way to survive if all the things that we use everyday stop workin
Also the people arent prepared to live without all these comforts
