they are extremely small structures and can't be seen through a compound microscope but you can see them with and electron microsope

They are organelles, organelles can't be observed with a regular microscope (too small). So, you need an electron microscope (EM). A scanning EM allows you to see what these organelles look like on the cell surface, while the transmission EM allows a more well rounded definition, more 3-D, if you will.

The usual student-grade lab microscopes cannot see these very small structures inside a cell.
