I really want to meet people but it feels so strange. I was only in one and I darted out so quick.

I feel so out of place and like I need an excuse to be there.

How can I learn to just chill and do what everyone else is doing? It's all mental, I know, but how can I make that awkward feeling subside?

Maybe it's the fact that I actually acknowledge that people are judging me sexually. I guess that makes me very nervous. How do I deal with that?

Know that a lot of other people there are feeling the same thing as you are! You should be a bit relaxed to know that you're in a gay place, and don't have to deal with str8's. You don't need an excuse to be there, your reason is to be somewhere with other gay folks. Chill, have a beverage, look at the scenery, just hangout. It will get better with time!

If you go out to a gay club don't go with the intention of meeting someone. Go with the intention of relaxing, having a few drinks and a good time. All of us, gay or straight, get judged sexually and by our looks. I don't know what to tell you to chill and loosen up. You've only been once. Try it again and just be yourself. You'll get more comfortable with it.

I attend a unitarian church which is open to all beliefs. We have gay, lesbian, bi, and trans groups at our church. There are many couples and couples with children. You might be a little more comfortable if you are kind of mentored in a less threatening atmosphere and if you decide you want to go to clubs you may have someone escort you.

Find some places that offer discussion groups for gays. A lot of churches like the Disciples of Christ, the Episcopals and the Unitarians promote safe opportunities for gays and their families to gather.

have a drink. relax. talk to people.
gays are all people too. with jobs, and lives, you'd be surprised how much you would have in common with most people.
