Well, I'm interested in all of it really, but I would like to know more about the Tokugawa period also (mostly).

I'm not sure what you are looking for, what time period, or if you want a highly involved scholarly work or something a little more easier to read.

Here are some books that I would recommend that should be easy to read and not bog you down in the scholarly aspects:

Embracing Defeat by John Dower
Hirohito and the Making of Japan by Herbert Brix
The Last Samurai: The Life and Times of Saigo Takamori by Mark Ravina - this is nothing like the movie
Toshie: A story of Village life in 20th Century Japan by Simon Partner
The Abacus and the Sword: The Japanese Penetration of Korea, 1895-1910 by Peter Duus
War Without Mercy by John Dower
Musui's Story trans by Teruko Craig
Racing the Enemy: Stalin, Truman and the Surrend of Japan by Hasegawa

These are all pretty good, most on Modern Japan but should give you soem good insights.

Hope this helps
