You most definitely don't have to know now. You don't even really have to know when you are old enough to go to college. You may only use one skill to earn your living, but you always can have the other skill for your hobby. And in 5 years you may have discovered that you like something entirely different. Something you don't even know which exists as a possibility right now.

And while I don't know about your drawing, you definitely should practice your writing. It will help you with any job you will get, even if you end up as a visual artist. Get out of the habit of using text messaging abbreviations in written text. Even at an informal forum like here. Use the spell checker. And while you should keep writing you also should give your writings other people to read so you get feedback of how and what to improve. Which your teacher does free for you if you hand in your homework...

DON'T PICK BETWEEN ONE OR THE OTHER!!!!!!!!!!!!

That would be a dumb move on your part. No-one ever said you can't do both.

Clive Barker does both, Tim Burton also has his fingers into a few different reative outlets as well. Limiting yourself by choosing one over the other is a silly idea.

Look, Sometimes you can get things out in a drawing you can't with words and vice versa. Stifling any creativity you have is just wrong and you should give yourself as many out lets as possible.

So you don't know how to draw. You can learn! So you make mistakes writing, you can learn to fix them as well. Everyone make mistakes and you just have to roll with it and fix what you can.

If you have the desire to do both then by all means study both. Who knows, maybe you can combine the two and come out with the greatest graghic novel ever!

Good luck

I would encourage working on both. I am going to make the assumption that you are fairly young. As you read and study more you will find that the art world is tightly tied to the world of writing. They are intertwined. Both media are just vehicles for a person to express their opinions, feelings, emotions, tell a story, ect. Neither can be completely independent of one another because people even inadvertently will be a reflection of the society they live in. So work on both. It's always better to be able to communicate in more than one way.

You can do both -- there are a lot of illustrators for children's books who write and draw. There are manga-writers who do both. And there are adult writers who do both (Edward Gorey, for example). If you are interested in both, you have lots of time now as a kid -- so do both.

And don't worry about making mistakes or "not knowing how to draw." Practice helps a lot -- and even professionals sometimes feel like they are making mistakes or not doing a good job.

The most important thing is that you *do* it. Don't just sit around dreaming about doing it. If you don't have money for a sketchbook, get a stick and scratch in the dirt. If you don't have money for a notebook and pencil, rehearse the stories over and over in your mind, and keep them there until you can put them down on paper (or on tape or video). Good luck!

You don't have to choose. Do both! No one is perfect, so don't worry about that. In both cases, it's getting the idea across that's important. There are so many directions you could take your career path if you know both. Have fun doing what you love. Opportunities will come down the road when you least expect it!
