Algebra problem help! PLEASE!?

Question

3(-7)² - 8(-7)³ + 4(-2)²
becomes:

-147 - 2744 + 16 = 2907

but if you do the problem the original way it's written, it equals -2875.

-147 - 2744 + 16 = -2875

So why do I have to do it this way to get the correct answer?

147 + 2744 + 16 = 2907

What happened to 147 being negative? How can I tell when to add the absolute value? How do I know when to switch adding to subtracting or vice versa?

= (3)[-7][-7] - 8[-7][-7[-7] + 4 [-2][-2]
= (3)(+49) - 8[-7][+49] + 4(+4)
= (3)(49) - 8(-343) + 16
= 147 + 2744 + 16
= 2907

Rule you can make:
If the base is negative and the exponent is EVEN the result is positive.
If the base is negative and the exponent is ODD the result is negative.
Do not do anything with the OPERAND until you reach the final step.
The second operand is MINUS. Incidentally, this is also the sign of the number 8.
The third operand is POSITIVE. Incidentally, this is also the sign of the number 4.
