Meteors from space are of two category, stony and ferrous. Some of the debris on the moon is lunar lava origin and some is from outer space.
When the planets colided with large meteors, some of the debris is from planets. I believe parts from earth and mars have fallen upon the surface of the moon.
What scientists are interested in is hydrides. If they can find hydrides they can make water from it. The water can be converted to hydrogen fuel or oxygen.
Scientist are also looking for really old material. The older the material the older they can recon how old the universe is.
