The African slaves were seen as animals for several reasons aside from skin color. Cultural, religious, language, income, inferior power and so forth. Most were betrayed by their own people or were prisoners of war and sold into slavery. This was also true of the Scots, Irish and Welsh slaves in the colonial period of the United States, and other English holdings. They were seen as animals, culturally different, spoke a heathen language, ignorant, didn't recognize a "legitimate" government, didn't know simple things like how to recognize and support a superior being (noble) and so forth. At some point in time almost every ethnic minority has gone through this. It is a way to justify disenfranchisement and keep them in a marginal condition economically.

You're wrong. It wasn't skin color. In the US African slaves were considered as animals because of their not speaking the language of the caucasians and also because if they were considered as "humans" that would put them on the same level as the caucasians and they would have to get paid wages and have the same rights and responsibilities as their "masters". The Bill of Rights would have included the African slaves too and caucasians were not about to let that happen. So they considered their slaves as animals. Greed, control, and power are the motivations for the problems in this country.
