My mother went to the hospital the other day due to not feeling well. She was really dizzy, nauseas, vomiting. They tested her blood sugar, O2 stats, she had an EKG, they tested sodium and did blood work. The only thing they came up with is that her blood sugar was almost 300. The doctor put her on some pills to bring it down but over 24 hours later she is still feeling ill and tired. She doesn't think it was the blood sugar but all the tests were fine. She also was on a blood pressure cuff for 3 hrs and they said it was fine. I can't think of anything that they didn't test for that it could be other than a nasty strain of the flu. She can't be pregnant since she doesn't have those parts anymore.

My mother is diabetic but is very careful about what she eats and checks her sugar often. The blood sugar was still that high after throwing up everything that she had for dinner. Today she has only had a bit of jello cuz it was all she could keep down and she has spent most of the day in bed.

Up until now she has just tested her sugar at home often and controlled it with diet and exercise. She is one of those stubborn people who rarely ever get sick so her going to the doctor means she is really not feeling well. When I talked to her she was groggy and couldn't give me alot of information but she was staggering dizzy and had an upset stomach. She is going to go back in a couple of days if the meds don't work but the fact that they are taking so long to work (this happened Saturday at 6am) makes us both think that maybe the blood sugar was just a side effect of something else.

You stated in your addendum that your mom is a diabetic. If she has the flu or even a bad cold, that along with the diabetes will cause her to feel bad for several days. She needs to take her medication as ordered by the doctor. She also needs to see her family doctor ASAP. When you are diabetic you need what is called "sick day plans". Your diet and medications may need to be adjusted for those few days you are sick. The high blood sugars can cause you to feel bad also. You did not say if your mom controlled her diabetes with diet alone before becoming ill. Just being sick can cause your blood sugars to go up. As can not eating properly. It can all be very scary for a person who is recently diagnosed with diabetes to become sick. I am a diabetic as well as being a nurse. That is why I know how very important it is for her to see her doctor. The sooner the better. She needs him/her to go over her diet and all that, especially for the "sick days". If her doctor is not comfortable giving her extensive advice on diabetes, ask to be referred to a diabetes educator, or community classes for diabetes education. They can be very helpful to her and actually the whole family, it can help everyone to understand the disease, and how to help her manage it and prevent complications. At any rate get her back to her doctor. She needs on going medical attention, especially during illness.

her blood sugar at 300 means that she is a diabetic the medicine they gave her was to bring down her sugar level. she must see her doctor with the results of her blood work and sugar level if she doesn't have a doctor she needs to go to a local clinic. everything will be fine once she See's a doctor on a regular basis. as for the blood pressure cuff on for 3 hours it is routinely monitoring your mom by a machine every 1/2 hour or 1 hour to make sure she is fine.

I am not a doctor, but I just got over the flu and the symptoms you mentioned are the same I had. Took me almost a week to get over it. Also, when it comes to blood sugar, there are a lot of different things that can affect it, such as being sick, stress, lots of things. Diabetes runs very strong in my family.

If she doesn't feel better in a couple days though, she should go see a different doctor.

is your mother a diabetic? if she has never been diagnosed as diabetic before then i would be concerned. a blood sugar level of 300 is almost certainly indicative of diabetes. the symptoms all could be attributed to high sugar levels. she needs to have her sugar checked again. if she has been taking these pills and they have brought her sugar down then she may be feeling bad because it is too low. if she has never been diagnosed with diabetes before i highly urge her to go to her family doctor right away. diabetes is easily controlled but left alone can be very serious and damaging to your overall health. i am a nurse and have several diabetics in my family

100 IS GOOD SUGAR NUMBER . GET IT DOWN FOR 4 OR MORE DAYS. IF IT WAS A FLU THEY WOULD OF KNOWN. HAVE HER EAT OAT MEAL THE REGULAR KIND. LOTS OF WATER AND CHICKEN BROTH. IF SHE IS NOT BETTER IN 3 DAYS START ALL OVER (AT ANOTHER HOSP.LOL) IF SHE IS COLD AND SWEATING FLU IS MOST LIKELY.
