My mom asked me a ???? Today and I don't know how to answer her because I have never had this issue... Here for the past year she only gets a period maybe once every 2-3 months.. and this time, she was concerned because she was changing her tampon every hour... and she has been having a lot of clots... She has never had them before either.... And she said that they were lik 1/2 dollar sized and (here is the gross part) she said that it looked like thick solidified jello... I am just wandering if that was normal or if not, what could be causing it.. She is mid 40's, anemic, hyperthyriod, smoker, and like 5'0 110 lbs... Any ideas??? Thanks!!!

Do you think any of her health conditions could be the cause, and also.. with her only having a period once every 2-3 months... could that be the change of life??? She is very stubborn and hard to get to the doctor....

as a nurse i'd have to say please get her to the doctor. yes it might possibly be "the change" but there are also other possibilities that are more serious. a woman her age is in a high risk group for uterine and ovarian cancer. there is also the possibility of fibroids or endometriosis. only a doctor can diagnose these things. for her health and safety she needs to see a gynecologist right away

It could be a number of things:
1. Starting menapause
2. Fibroid tumor (needs to see doctor) which may be the beginnings of cancer. Not all fibroids are.
3. hormone imbalance
4. Thyroid issue

All in all she needs to see a GYN. If she is anemic now she is really going to be anemic after all this bleeding.

Could be other things that above writers have mentioned.

it could be the beginning of the 'change' with her periods becoming so irregular and unusually heavy. however there are also other medical conditions such as fibroids and andremyiosis (dont think that spelt right) that can have similiar symptons, if it is one of these causes it will not resolve on its own and she should seek the advice of a gynaecologist. being anaemic is a problem as there are many serious side effects of this if it is left unchecked long term (heart disease, depression and renal failure to name a few). excessive bleeding with clotting will exacerbate this problem. unlike your mum i had horrible, heavy periods my whole life and at 43 i have just had a hysterectomy as this really is the only solution to my ongoing health problems, i wish you luck convincing your mum to seek help, maybe offering to go with her and providing her with all your love and support will help her see that she really needs to seek help sooner rather than later good luck

HI Pretty mam, This is not normal specially the clots being half a dollar size. She could be started going though the change of life. i have gone though it already and i never had large blood clots like your mom. You really need to get her to the doctor A.S.A.P. It could be something that is cancer or with her ovaries

Please take her in to the doctor yesterday!! This is her life that she is messing with. A Friend.
