Vaginal mucus is a natural substance occurring within the vagina, particularly the cervix, that maintains a certain level of moisture at all times.
The consistency of vaginal mucus changes according to the period of the menstrual cycle. Both the chemical make-up and the physical consistency (viscosity) change during this time.
A sticky, clear consistency usually indicates that the woman is ovulating.

About everyone's answer here is pretty precise.
"The plug of mucous that fills the cervix to protect against disease and infection. This may start leaking out as the cervix slowly starts opening before labor, or may come out in one big chunk. It can be pink or brownish tinged with blood."
I just made 39 wks yesterday. Last doctor's appointment was this past Thursday and still not even dilated. However, yesterday my discharge started changing in color. This morning it was a light pink. Now, it's a brownish color and I'm getting a little excited and nervous. =l

The previous answer is absolutely correct. To simplify things a little, often the mucus plug coming loose is a sign of imminent labour, and some people refer to this as a "show". It doesn't happen with everyone, or at least it isn't obvious with everyone.
