Your spelling seems to NOT point to Bobby Vinton, but he did do that song. I looked up what I suspected, and I was right, the singer you are looking for Jim Reeves. He would be considered classic country.
Bobby Vinton did the most popular version. But having grown up with Jim Reeves in the house (one of both parents' favs) I do know I have heard this before. I know a lot of his songs, he had a very unique, sweet voice. Jim Reeves is actually a family favorite. My granddad shook his hand once, he is part of my local history (east Texas here) and his song, "It Is No Secret What God Can Do" was played at my granddad's funeral. Some other songs:
Am I Losing You?
Mexican Joe
He'll Have To Go (put your sweet lips...a little closer...to the phone....)
I can't find a sample but maybe you can. The album is called Gentleman Jim, Vol 2. Track 3. Here is a link to that info:

Anyway, with the proper spelling, you find his bio here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jim_Reeves and here is the birthday.
"Jim Reeves (August 20, 1923 – July 31, 1964)"
