plan to keep the goldfish?
go with locally caught pan fish, like blue gills sunfish perch and then catch a few small catfish, fed flake food with color enhancers most are surprised at all of the colors they produce

getting rid of the goldfish?

the cichlid family is vast so if you want a peaceful colorful community tank go with the African cichlids from lake Tanganyika

You can't put other fish in with goldfish. Goldfish are coldwater fish and tropicals need heated water. Also, goldfish produce high quantities of ammonia and would make the environment difficult for tropicals to live in. I personally think that goldfish are very cute, funny, lovable fish; I call them the puppy dogs of the aquatic world, and are a lot more interesting than tropicals, but that's a personal opinion. Everyone has their own likes and that's why people keep so many different kinds of fish. But, if you are bored with your goldfish and want to move into tropicals, you will need to give them away because you can't mix the two. See if a pet store would take them. Put an add on Craigslist. People love finding free fish. If you go with tropicals, the rule is 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water, so you will need to take a look at the full grown size of the fish you want to get and then do the math and, in conjunction with comparing compatibility, you can determine what to get.

Are going to get Rid of the gold-fish and start over? If so you will not need a tank heater-----goldfish and Siamese fighters are about the only ones that don't have to have heated water-------your best bet would be to find a good pet shop that specializes in fish----they are knowledgeable and will show you all the species and tell you which fish are 'community' fish and which ones are a bit aggressive....you best bet is to go and look because you want healthy and robust specimens to start with. There are countless possibilities----get something you like thats available now!.

I have read that goldfish (though they are cold water fish) can actually handle warm water:

http://www.goldfishparadise.com/water/temperature.php

However, this is not ideal for them...sure they can live in warmer water but they prefer it a bit cooler (actually I use to have goldfish in an outdoor pond when I use to live back in Australia, and regularly in winter the pond would freeze over).

Tropicals are better, more colourful and some are easy to keep.

Guppies and Mollies... (EDIT: I meant PLATYS, Mollies need hard/salty water - probably why someone gave me a thumbs down :P ).

...are pretty nice and easy to keep. They also breed like crazy, so you can have fun with baby fish. (Just plant some nice bushy plants for them to hide in).

You may consider a small planted tank.

They are nice to look at and the plants filter the water (chemically) for you.

See these sites for planted tanks:
http://www.plantedtank.net/
http://www.csd.net/~cgadd/aqua/art_plant_newtank.htm

You'll need decent lights for (most) plants. But some work well in low lights.

Plants are really good for your tank and they look good too. You can't really have them with goldfish (they'll eat them or uproot them). But (most) tropicals will leave them alone.

If you go tropical and don't want the standard Guppy/Platy - I say:
Gouramis (Lace/Pearl or Dwarf Gouramis are best.)

Avoid the 3 spot Gourami as they can be little devils).

Rams
http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_ram.php

Neon Tetras (actually most tetras are nice)
http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_neon.php

Otos (algae eaters)
http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_otom.php

Siamese Flying Foxes (eat algae the Otos won't eat, good fish)
http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_fox.php

Kribs
http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_krib.php

Corys (there are many types, this link just shows one):
http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_cory4.php

If you want to keep lake Chilids, you must make sure they all come from the same lake. They also need rocks (like a all rock tank) if they come from one particular lake.

EDIT: Angelfish are nice, but they can eat smaller fish such as neons and they should have a large tank...3 feet should be OK if it is sorta high. They will eat other fish's (guppy/platy etc.) babies, so think before you buy...then sometimes guppys will eat their own babies if you don't give them shelter... :)

3 foot aquarium? I guess it's a 55 gallon. Don't put in small fish, they'get lost in there and struggle to find food. Saltwater fish (very expensive),cichlids, angelfish,"sharks", tinfoil barb, silver dollars. sun catfish, pimeodlla catfish, plecostomus.
You could put in small oscars and a pacu,if you plan to upgrade to a larger tank later on. (not all of them together)

Colorful exotic fish add vibrance to an aquarium, go to a local pet store and see just how many varieties they have. The clownfish are really cute and most kids love to watch them.

Yeah, you will desire to have easily put in some water conditioner first! you will desire to have additionally cycled the aquarium first to be sure the ammonia levels would not improve too intense, however the goldfish would have probable made it throughout the biking technique if the water have been appropriate taken care of first!
