Ponstel, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, is used for the relief of moderate pain (when treatment will not last for more than 7 days) and for the treatment of menstrual pain. More common side effects may include: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, stomach and intestinal upset, and vomiting.

Do not take Ponstel if you are sensitive to or have ever had an allergic reaction to it. You should not take it, either, if you have had asthma attacks, hay fever, or hives caused by aspirin or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as Motrin and Nuprin. Make sure your doctor is aware of any drug reactions you have experienced. Do not take Ponstel if you have ulcerations or frequently recurring inflammation of your stomach or intestines.

Avoid this drug if you have serious kidney disease.

Dosage Suggested per manufacturer:

Moderate Pain

The usual starting dose is 500 milligrams, followed by 250 milligrams every 6 hours, if needed, for 1 week.

Menstrual Pain

The usual starting dose, once symptoms appear, is 500 milligrams, followed by 250 milligrams every 6 hours for 2 to 3 days.

If your periods are not normal, your OBGYN may prescribe birth control pills. They will make your cycles normal and lessen the pain as well as make your periods lighter and shorter. If you are still having pain here is what my OBGYN has suggested and/or prescribed:
birth control pills( had to stop them b/c they cause liver tumors, not to worry this is VERY RARE, but it did happen to me 2x in 4years, both times required major surgeries )
Annaprox ( basically it is a prescription strength ALEVE ) take ALEVE 2 tablets 2 times daily
DARVON taken with IBUPROFEN
if you have a really nice doc..HYDROCODONE..
This is what my doctor has given me..along with XANAX for PMS..also I find that warm baths and heating pads work well...if you must be out and about try the thermacare premenstrual patches...Each case is different..so I would check with my doctor to be on the safe side..you could also be exhibiting signs of other more serious problems..hope this helps!
