With his apparent sincerity, and plain spoken manner. He was a Father figure and a General of great renown. He was a Cincinnatus, recently back from the wars yearning for the plow, but willing to return to duty as president at the head of the men he had so recently lead. He promised those recently returned young men the fruits of a just victory and the end to an unpopular war. And he managed to deliver on that mostly. Sort of.
